When Is a Tooth Extraction Needed?
We always look at ways to save a tooth before recommending an extraction. When a tooth has severe decay, a crack that can't be repaired, or advanced gum disease that has compromised the bone around it, extraction may be the right choice. Crowding and wisdom teeth that are causing problems are also common reasons.
If there's a chance the tooth can be saved with root canal therapy or another treatment, we'll discuss that option with you first.
Simple vs. Surgical Extractions
A simple extraction removes a tooth that is visible above the gumline. The area is numbed with local anesthetic, and the tooth is loosened and removed. Most patients are comfortable throughout the procedure.
A surgical extraction is used when a tooth is broken at the gumline, has not fully erupted, or is otherwise not accessible with a simple technique. This includes many wisdom teeth. The procedure still uses local anesthetic, and oral conscious sedation is available for adults who prefer a more relaxed experience.
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom teeth are the last molars to come in, usually in the late teens or early twenties. When there isn't enough room in the jaw, they can become impacted — stuck below the gumline or only partially erupted. Partially erupted wisdom teeth are difficult to clean and can become infected. They can also put pressure on the teeth next to them.
X-rays show the position of your wisdom teeth and whether they are likely to cause problems. We'll review the images with you and explain what we see before recommending any treatment.
What to Expect
Your visit starts with an exam and x-rays. We'll review what we find and explain the procedure before we begin. The area is numbed, the tooth is removed, and gauze is placed to help control bleeding. You'll leave with written aftercare instructions and a number to call if you have questions.
A follow-up visit may be scheduled depending on the complexity of the extraction.
Nervous About an Extraction?
Dental anxiety is common, and it shouldn't keep you from getting care you need. Oral conscious sedation for adults is available for extractions and other procedures. You remain conscious and able to respond, but deeply relaxed. Most patients remember little of the procedure afterward.
Let us know when you call if sedation is something you'd like to discuss.
Replacing an Extracted Tooth
When a tooth is removed, the bone in that area can begin to shrink over time. Bone grafting at the time of extraction can preserve the bone and keep your options open for a future implant.
Replacing a missing tooth helps keep the surrounding teeth from shifting and maintains the structure of your bite. Options include a dental implant, a bridge, or dentures. We'll explain each option so you can decide what's right for you.
Aftercare Basics
Follow the written aftercare instructions we give you. Avoid straws and smoking while the area heals, as suction can disturb the clot that forms in the socket. Eat soft foods and avoid the extraction site when chewing.
Some swelling and discomfort in the first day or two is normal. Call us if bleeding, pain, or swelling gets worse instead of better, or if you have any concerns.
