When Should My Child See the Dentist?

We see children starting at age 3. Regular checkups help catch cavities early, before they become bigger problems, and help children build comfortable habits around dental care.

If you have a younger child and questions about their teeth, call us at (727) 584-9200 and we can talk through what to watch for.

Your Child's First Visit

The first visit is a friendly introduction to the office and the team. We do a gentle exam and cleaning, take x-rays when needed, and leave time for your questions. We go at your child's pace and explain what we're doing in words that make sense to them.

Parents are welcome to stay with their child throughout the visit.

Cleanings and Exams for Kids

At each checkup, we clean your child's teeth, check for cavities and early signs of problems, and review how their teeth and jaw are developing. X-rays are taken when they're needed to see between teeth and below the gumline.

Regular visits let us catch small issues before they become bigger ones and give us a chance to answer your questions as your child grows.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and makes teeth more resistant to decay. We apply a fluoride treatment at your child's cleaning visits when it's recommended. It's quick and comfortable.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a thin coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. The grooves in molars are hard to clean thoroughly, and sealants help keep food and plaque from settling in them.

Sealants are applied quickly and don't require any drilling. We'll let you know when your child's teeth are ready for them.

Helping Your Child Feel Comfortable

We explain each step in kid-friendly words and go at your child's pace. Spanish-speaking team members are available.

We do not offer sedation for children. Sedation is available for adults only.

Healthy Habits at Home

Good habits at home make a big difference between visits. We recommend:

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  • Help younger children brush until they can do it well on their own
  • Floss once teeth are touching
  • Limit sugary drinks and snacks
  • Keep regular dental checkups

We're happy to answer questions about your child's home care routine at any visit.
